Thomas Family Theatre: Camping Get-a-way

Over Memorial Day weekend we decided to take a camping trip to Fall Creek Falls State Park. This beautiful park is just under two hours from our house and has several incredible waterfalls! This time we planned early and Dan took an extra day off since we knew it would be a busy weekend for camping in the park. The website said they didn't reserve spots and it was first come first serve basis. Our game plan- leave early Friday morning and beat the rush by getting a campsite by lunchtime. Unfortunately when we got there we found out they DID reserve spots- over half of the campsites were reserved and all the rest of the sites were already full. I was so disappointed because we planned so carefully so this would not happen. I made sure to tell the poor girl at the check-in counter that they needed to fix their website because it gave incorrect information and made it a very bad situation for people like us. Luckily though she did mention a campground outside the park and we went to investigate. Thankfully Sunrise Campground (a Christian campground) had plenty of openings and were so accommodating! We found a great site that was fairly private- we did have a bit of a hike up to the bathhouse and to get water but it was no problem. We had electricity at our site and it was a few dollars cheaper than the state park! Now that we know Fall Creek Falls does reserve sites we will do that in the future!

Amelia loved to play her little CD player and would dance to the music- she kept putting her leg up in the air, almost like a ballet move. . . maybe we have a future ballerina!

This camping trip had fun new challenges- like keeping a very active 1yr old busy and away from the fire! We used the fire to cook every meal so we were both constantly watching her to make sure she was no where near the fire or wouldn't accidentally fall near the fire. She seemed to fall like ever 5 minutes so her little knees and hands were always dirty! She did get a scrap on her knee but that actually happened on our sidewalk right before we left. The second day camping we had to put a band-aid on it because each time she fell it would bleed a little. Unfortunately, this girl would not keep a band-aid on! I think next time we will sacrifice the privacy and go for a site that is more open and has grass for our little walker.

Another not so fun challenge- our air mattress had some kind of a very slow leak to it just got lumpy and we didn't sleep well at all the first night. We think it was part of the valve where you put air in- it can lock and unlock. For some reason it kept moving to unlock and slowly leaking air. The second night we only lost a little bit of air so it was much better

This campground filled up on Saturday and only had one bathhouse. We had to wait in line for a shower- so of course it was rather lukewarm . But it's camping- this is what is involved and we were lucky to have showers. Some campgrounds do not even have showers. So it's all part of the experience!
